How to Help Your Child with Reading Homework

I taught young students how to read for 14 years before moving into the world of technology. As I search for valuable resources, I share my discoveries with others here. Today, I ran across this video that is an excellent resource for teachers to share with parents. If we are going to help youngsters with reading, we want to be on the same page in using strategies during their practice at home. I can see teachers using this at the beginning of school for Meet the Teacher or during Parent Conferences. In my opinion, the video is a great resource and can alleviate many problems before they begin. Hope you like it!

Reading Bear Reading Program

For those of you who have young children in the beginning stages of reading, you may want to check out Reading Bear. The site is nonprofit and free to join. It is helpful because the videos show the person's mouth as they are enunciating the sounds. It teaches 1200 various vocabulary words and has quizzes for them to take. I don't think it is as flashy as Starfall, but it is a good supplement! See if you think so. Here is the Getting Started page here. You can get flashcards on Larry Sanger's blog who successfully taught his toddler to read.
