Want a New Cool Classroom Tool?

This is an exciting find and I think you will enjoy it! Look at all the different tools you can have at your fingertips as you project and teach. What I think will sell you on this tool is that it was created by a Netherlands teacher. He wanted his students to be able to focus on their work more. I love that he is open to taking your suggestions to improve the tool also. Go to Classroomscreen.com and check it out for yourself. I am not sure how long it has been out, but Julie Smith has a few videos on YouTube sharing it and helping you with the many features and widgets. I LOVE how you can open/close them in one instant click. Here is what it offers:

Can't Get Enough of Jeopardy?

Just found this neat site from TCEA's Community. It is called FlipQuiz and is a great tool for teachers. I love the idea of having teachers introduce themselves using this Jeopardy board. Of course, you can't get enough of Jeopardy and everyone knows how competitive student can get when reviewing for an assessment. Check this one out, because the set up is easy on the teacher's part. Just put in your questions and answers, and you are ready to play. You will have to create a FREE account however before getting started, but that's so with everything.

Let me begin by saying, "Teachers, enjoy your last weekend of summer!" Many teachers will be getting back to school next week participating in staff development and enduring those fantastic meetings. Can I get an AMEN? I came across this great visual on my Twitter feed and thought it was something you could use while discussing proper online etiquette. Social Media can be a wonderful teaching tool, but these are some great tips to get them prepared. We can see what the 80% of teachers think about this infographic.

Importance of Blogging

If I could have one wish for the upcoming school year, it would be to get all teachers on board with Blogging. There are tons of testimonies out there in various forms that share the importance of blogging. Here is a place to get started called Blog Basics and Blogging Tips for Teachers. Personally, if you do not enjoy blogging or reflecting on your work, please make it a goal this year to allow and encourage students to blog. Teachers have many opportunities to use blogging in their curriculum with students. I can promise you, if you agree to try it for a month, you will have students hooked and who knows, you may see how it benefits your lessons. I love this visual on reasons to blog by Sylvia Duckworth. It came across on my Twitter feed.

Need a Crash Course?

Wow folks, thanks to these two brothers, John & Hank Green, and a couple of other teachers, we have awesome resources for teaching and learning. Most videos have nearly 200,000 views and they have 2 million subscribers! So if you click on the image it will take you to their home page on YouTube. There are great videos that you can use in class to support your lessons. They cover Literature, World History, Chemistry, Anatomy & Physiology, Biology, Ecology, Astronomy, Psychology, and U.S. Government and Politics. World Read Aloud Day is March 4th

Do you teach reading? How about language arts? This is a great world event (World Read Aloud Day) that supports reading aloud and sharing stories at home, in school, or wherever you may be with children. You can download a classroom kit, community kit, home or office kit with ideas and lessons activities in support of the event. You can even download a picture book (free) to share called, "New Day, New Friencs" which I did last week. The site is called Lit World where you can read for more information and gather your resources. Last year, over one MILLION people in 80 countries participated. A favorite opportunity that you may want to check out is hosted by Skype in the Classroom. They have authors willing and waiting to connect with classrooms to share their LOVE for Literature. I like it how teachers can hand pick the best author that fits into their curriculum and what they are teaching. Don't miss out on these great opportunities with your students. How to Help Your Child with Reading Homework

I taught young students how to read for 14 years before moving into the world of technology. As I search for valuable resources, I share my discoveries with others here. Today, I ran across this video that is an excellent resource for teachers to share with parents. If we are going to help youngsters with reading, we want to be on the same page in using strategies during their practice at home. I can see teachers using this at the beginning of school for Meet the Teacher or during Parent Conferences. In my opinion, the video is a great resource and can alleviate many problems before they begin. Hope you like it!

Have You Heard of Zaption?

What is Zaption? It is a tool that makes video come alive with engaging and interactive video lessons created by none other than YOU! (That is unless you only use the ones in the gallery). Don't take my word for it, Take a Zaption Tour. They have a gallery to watch some of the created Zappy tours where you can take video, clip it to include what you need for a lesson, add in questions or reading prompts to get your students thinking. This tool is well done and so user friendly. It reminds me of the one called EdPuzzle.

If you don't check out Zaption you will be missing out on an incredible tool that is FREE for a basic plan! They allow a 30 day test drive of Zaption Pro (look for the Take a TestDrive button). Zaption even has Pro Campus for those districts who have $$ floating around LOL. They provide an extensive Help Center with Five tips on creating your own effective Zaption Tour. As if the web version is not enough, they have the Zaption app also.

Science of Everyday Life

Great resource for Science teachers! You need to check out this one-stop portal from Discovery Education and 3M with K-12 standards-aligned lesson plans. This is for ALL ages, with tabs for Teachers, Students, and Families. I love the sections on Interactive Lesson plans that you can download to use on IWB (Interactive Whiteboards) tablets, and more. They are sorted by grade level strands: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12 much like Discovery Education's videos are categorized. You can even test your knowledge in identifying how science can appear in unexpected places by visiting the Innovation HQ (Headquarters). It is equipped with Virtual Labs, Did You Know, Science Fun, and a section where you can meet 3M Scientists. As if that was not enough, you can Travel through Time using the Decade Navigator to explore in a timeline fashion. I can see some great group work using this tool and have students create learning media for others. What a great way for them to explore past innovations! I can imagine History teachers also loving this tool and collaborating with Science teachers to learn more about the past. Don't you just know that at the end of all this learning, there is a quiz for each decade! Now that is a neat way to complete the learning, right teachers?

New Wave of PD

First there was the great EdmodoCon2014, the online conference that was LIVE all day, then I see that Evernote will soon be putting their own Conference, but I am not sure it is free. Now I just ran across this Streamathon given by Discovery Education. This must be the new wave of PD for teachers by sharing your product in a convenient style. I was able to catch some of EdmodoCon2014 while I was working and it was exceptional. The only problem is that I needed to hear ALL of it instead of the bits and pieces caught in my busy day. The good news is that EdmodoCon2014 recorded the event, so you can go and catch the presentations in their entirety here. Here is the information that I have received about the upcoming Streamathon on October 25, 2014. I love the idea of making it a party with all your teacher friends and/or groups. Or if you rather enjoy the comforts of your home in your PJ's just watch it there. That's the beauty of this new wave of PD that is being offered by the BIG names in Education.

I believe that resources for the Smart Board or other IWB can be used interactively on any tablet too. Today, I'd like to share this great resource that I located while taking a much needed day off from work. This great find may be proof that I need more days off LOL. This site was created by Karen Ogden from Columbia, South Carolina. The resource was created on Weebly and is one site I bet you will want to keep bookmarked and a click away. Top 100 Tools of 2013

I love looking at the results of the top tools for learning. I just located Jane Hart's report on the top 100 Tools for Learning 2013 on her website C4LPT (Center for Learning & Performance Technologies. She released the report yesterday and it was compiled from votes of over 500 professionals in both education and the workplace. What's amazing is that she had votes from 48 different countries! Blogs in Education

I posted earlier that I would provide information on the benefits of blogs. I've located some great information and hope you can use some of them. Here is a simple explanation of Blogs in Plain English:

The best resource on Blogs in Education is from the Department of Education. What better place to get your information? Included is a Tech Learning article about Gaggle (which we currently have in our District). It shares how students use Gaggle for their Personal Learning Network. They have access to Chat Rooms, Assignment Drop Boxes, Social Wall, blogs, Digital Lockers, and Discussion boards all in a filtered safe environment.
