Is Social Media OK for Primary Students?

This is an excellent read (by Beth Holland) for teachers  or parents who make comments such as these about using technology and/or social media: 
  • They are too young and spend too much time on the computer
  • They need to learn how to read and write first
  • They need to be able to communicate in person
  • They will be exposed to the trash on social media
  • I just don't think it is age appropriate
If you wonder about this, read about safe ways to instruct primary students in a controlled environment and still be able to get to all the other literacy skills that are required. I love how Mrs. Holland compared Digital Immigrants learning how to write a friendly letter or a thank you note in school to teaching Social Media. We were taught proper etiquette and were not expected to master them independently; but were guided through the process with the teacher.  I love the examples that were shared and it is hard to remember that the students were in First and Second grade! Yeah! Super job! for those teachers who create secure Twitter accounts for their classes and use KidBlog to teach their content of reading and writing while helping them learn to live in a technological society. Kudos to teachers here, there, and everywhere who step out of their comfort zone because they know it is best for students.

Can't Get Enough of Dr. Seuss?

I don't think you can tire of Dr. Seuss (see more @Seussville). I enjoy seeing all the creative twists of his awesome work. Today, I came across this sample and had to share with my friends. It was created by none other than Hootsuite and I read about it on the TeachThought blog. It is called, "A Twitter Guide Inspired by Dr. Seuss". I just know you are going to enjoy it as much as I and celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday, this March 2, 2015 (He would have been 111 years old). Would love to hear your chuckles as you read this.

It has been super busy and crazy here in Southeast, TEXAS. Can I blame it on the unpredictable weather we have been having? I am finally able to shout out about my awesome attendance at TCEA in Austin, Texas six days ago. It was, as always, great to be around TECHie & NERDy friends around the country to learn and collaborate. In fact, one can learn so much that your head feels like it will explode! I have come across sites where attendees have accumulated their learnings and resources. I wanted you to have the links all in one place and check out some of my favorite ones. Of course, you can always refer back to the hashtags, #tcea15, #tcea2015, #learnanywhere on Twitter to find more. The handouts that TCEA provides  is another place to find resources. I also found that Miquel Guhlin shared his own resources through Postach.io in combination with Evernote.  He graciously provides a how-to explaining the tracking of Twitter with Evernote and Postach.io. Ok, enough rambling, here is my takeaways for you:

Twitter and Kindergarten

I created this list to help jump start a Kindergarten teacher on Twitter. Like many newbies to Twitter, an account was created, but that was the end of it for her. I remember how it was in the beginning when you just did not "get" Twitter and had yet to discover its power. My goal is to step her through this in baby steps. One of our 5th grade teachers, Summer Diamond, had the privilege to present at iPadpalooza in Austin this week. Little did she know was that we were able to view her with LiveStream that is set up at Eanes School District. I was thrilled when I received the email about iPadpalooza Live. When I logged in, she was just setting up,so I was to catch the entire presentation! I know she won't mind if I share her wonderful classroom ideas for other to view. Time of Year to Evaluate

In education, this time of year is for reflecting. Thinking about your year as a teacher, friend, leader, etc. It is valuable so that you can grow and learn from failures, glean from your successes, file those true and tried activities that worked and just re-evaluate yourself as a person. I ran across this wonderful tweet that to me shares what most folks want in leaders. See what you think:



Let me go ahead and put in a plug for Twitter! It is not a place that I go to see what my friends are eating or what movie they are watching. I visit to collaborate with educators about important issues and gain numerous resources and support. That is possible when you have built and carefully selected your PLN on Twitter. It is something that many continue to refine and grow. I hope that you will consider giving Twitter another try! There are many resources available for beginners! Here is my favorite Twitter for Beginners by Amber Coggins which you can download at this site. I would be happy to step you through the process!

One of my latest craze for "scooping" up resources is Scoop It! I have set up a free Scoop It! account and can post images, articles, websites, pdfs, blog posts, charts, graphs, and more. You can post your own comments, tips, and ideas for others who follow you. One thing that makes it handy, is that it will connect to Twitter & Facebook if you desire to post to those also. It is a great tool to follow others who 'scoop' up the same type of resources as you do. You can create up to 5 different categories on the free version.
