Are You Ready for Back to School?

Welcome Back the the 2017-2018 School Year
Tech Talk blog has a guest contributor, Tania Jackson. She is one of our 4th grade teachers on the Mauriceville Elementary campus. I appreciate her allowing me to share her wonderful discoveries this summer that she promises will make your class run a bit smoother this year. Check out her tips below:

I have 3 quickies to share regarding the OneDrive app that I've discovered/been using!

  1. There's a free app for OneDrive! Once installed, you can view, send, and manipulate everything in your folders that are synced from your computer (your Cloud).  Makes for quick access!

2. Sometimes I need to move pics of my class that I've taken on my cell to my computer, and it's time-consuming because I usually end up emailing them to myself and it won't let you bulk too many!
Having the OneDrive app on your phone/tablet makes it easy!  You just select the picture, or pictures all at once, then "Send to" (the same button you'd use if sending the pic via text or email) and it gives your OneDrive as an option!  They're just added to your folders and accessible from any device!

3.  Sometimes I need to scan a document to put it on the SmartBoard or print or whatever!  First, open the app.  On the main screen OneDrive has a built in "Scanner" that turns any document you snap into a PDF and instantly adds it to your Cloud! I really like this function!
Click the + sign at the top right hand corner and choose "Scan"

SMART Notebook Files in Easter Theme

Wow, what a find today when I ran across this awesome resource just in time for the Easter holiday. If you want to engage your students (we know how their little minds wander when it's so pretty outside) with some fun activities, check out Shannon Long's (@SweetBlessShan) Smart Notebook files for Easter. While you are browsing through them, think  about how she has organized these in a LiveBinder. It beats going through your old school files flipping through pages & pages of materials. Does anyone do that anymore? I know I spent many years in team meetings choosing the activities that everyone brought to the table for our unit. I think that they dreaded me coming with my large stack to cull through. It was so time consuming and now with digital technology, everything can be saved and organized online with a SEARCH feature to boot. That in itself is worth all the time saved. I hope you will agree that these resources will be a hit in your classroom. You don't have to bookmark them all. In LiveBinder, they allow you to add other binders to your shelf. It is free to join, and does not require you to create one. You can just go and add all the ones that others have curated! Now, go and enjoy this spring weather since you now have so many activities ready for your students next week!

Are you a SMART educator with an IWB?

SMART Technologies has been making many changes. Have you become frustrated and lost with so many of their changes? It has been hard keeping up with their free training resources and rushing to update your software before they began charging for any new software version updates. Several teachers and I joined in on a Ed2Ed webinar for their Virtual User Group. I was able to note some of the HELP (free) resources for new users who want to hone your skills on your Interactive Whiteboards. I think like most companies, they are trying to improve their product and at the same time, keep their customers happy. Here is where you can go to register for the LIVE webinars which they hold monthly. Heather Lamb (@heatherlamb08) hosts them and usually has an active SMART Exemplary Educator to share lessons, tools, and valuable IWB knowledge. You DO need to be mindful of the version that they use during the webinar, some tools are specific to the new Version 14 (even though they said before the webinar that most tools are not version specific, I found that to be the case).

The webinars are very informative, but with the short time frame (after all the product promos), they move through the tools and features quickly. That being said, you can refer back to the recording where they share on their Educator2Educator YouTube Channel This place is worth visiting. Love how they have sorted the short videos into categories which teachers will LOVE! Note all the different virtual user groups that they have now: SMART Table, English, and Tech2Tech (for technicians-here is the Tech2Tech website with more links) just to name a few.

Links for FREE available Training Resources on the SMART Board/Notebook:

  1. Through your SMART Notebook software (visual shows where)












  2. SMART Training for Education: This link takes you to a page where you can Sign up for the Learning space with a FREE account. It allows you to do a needs assessment and then it places you in their training site called Course Park. There you will find free and $$ training resources. I don't think CoursePark is user-friendly, I always have difficulty navigating through their site. It helps to know your networks that are helpful and watch them. On my menu, it has in green SMART Learning Space for Education. Search several keywords: Smart Technologies, SMART Notebook, etc. You can follow people and networks. I learned yesterday, that it is helpful to move out of "courses" and click on "Boards" for information. See visual below:

  3. PDFs and Videos on SMART Notebook: I went through SMART Technologies' website and through many links of training to get to this site (hope link works) that has pdf's and flash video with tutorials. Many of you may like the paper/print to learn. You will need to scroll to the SMART Notebook section. There's a section on the SMART Table too.
  4. Interact Cafe (Lamar ISD) Training Online
  5. EdCompass Blog gives you a classroom perspective  (has testamonies, templates, stories, lessons samples and more)
  6. SMART Exchange- we cannot leave off this number one FAVORITE for resources of all kinds (even training ones). You can arrive at the SMART Exchange through your software by clicking the small blue icon (below) that is on your toolbar or by going in your gallery for the link.

Easy Peasy! Smart Board Matching Activity

Just had to post this easy activity to create. No matter what content you want students to review, this is an excellent way to get students involved in learning! Enjoy! BTW...thanks to +Brian Weir on Google+ for sharing this. He also posted this on the Smart Board Revolution community group on Google+ (That's where I found it) That's what makes communities so valuable!

Smart Board or IWB Resources

I believe that resources for the Smart Board or other IWB can be used interactively on any tablet too. Today, I'd like to share this great resource that I located while taking a much needed day off from work. This great find may be proof that I need more days off LOL. This site was created by Karen Ogden from Columbia, South Carolina. The resource was created on Weebly and is one site I bet you will want to keep bookmarked and a click away. This is recommended for grades K-5. Hope you enjoy this and can use it to engage your students. Smart Board Resources to Bookmark

SMART Texas Virtual User Group  (If you go to this link and  sign up for the webinar (even if it's passed) it will allow you to download the recording! The webinar shares how to access and add widgets to your content. They predict widgets will explode for the Smart Board soon. This is worth watching teachers!

Also, be sure to join the Virtual User Group. This is an excellent way to learn online in the comfort of your home. They have monthly webinars. I will try and post the dates!

Within the post, you will see valuable links that I have also posted the links on the LCM Technology Wiki  for Smart Board. As a new Smart Board owner, I would bookmark these links to help you in locating valuable lessons and tips on your new equipment.

I Have an Interactive Whiteboard, Now What? - Atomic Learning

Congratulations to those teachers who have recently become new owners of a Smart Board for their classrooms. We have several places that we can recommend to get you started using your new technology tool. I posted Atomic Learning's link to their workshop that is a great place to begin. We also have teachers who have presented during our Professional Development days and have posted resources on our LCM technology wiki which I recommend you visiting. You have to have an account in wikispaces (free) to be able to join and view the materials. There are some exciting ideas there, but the best place for resources is within Smart Exchange with Smart Tech. They have a great amount of lesson plans and teacher made lessons for you to use immediately. You have to join (free) to be able to view and download the lessons. I find it valuable to join the Smart community to connect with teachers in your grade level and subject area. It is a forum where you can look for answers to problems with your lessons. Last, but not least is the ever so awesome NING that I have experienced and find helpful. It is called the Smart Revolution and is worth the visit. BTW, enjoy your new Smart Board!
